Abstract: The talk will briefly review some early approaches at increasing the bandwidth of single electron transistors that culminated in the invention of the radio frequency single electron transistor (rf-SET) by Schoelkopf [Science 280, 1238 (1998)]. Applications of the rf-SET will be a focus, drawing heavily on previous work at UNSW.

Scanning probe microscopy applied to studying gas-surface interactions and performing lithography on the nanoscale.
Show Abstract
I will describe two applications of scanning probe microscopy for performing lithography on the nanoscale. Firstly I will describe experiments involving locally depleting a shallow 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by AFM induced anodic oxidation of the surface. Using this technique 1-D constrictions are defined which exhibit quantised conduction with larger sub-band separations than devices defined by conventional split-gate techniques. Secondly will I outline the use of a hydrogen monolayer resist mask, patterned with STM, to the positioning of individual P atoms into substitutional Si(001) surface lattice sites with 1 nm accuracy. As a prerequisite to work, the processes of adsorption, dissociation and diffusion for the PH3-Si(001) system have been characterised in detail and will be reviewed here.
